Description

Agapanthus africanus, also called Lily of the Nile or African Lily, is super easy to grow in warm, sunny locations. Plant these hardy beauties in patio containers or garden beds and prepare for plenty of hummingbird visits. If you’re looking to make a dramatic impact in your summer garden, the massive 8-inch umbels of fragrant flowers are sure to do the trick!

Lily of the Nile is a beautiful evergreen perennial native to South Africa. It produces glossy clumps of long, arching, strap-like leaves. Large, rounded clusters of lily-like flowers are produced on long, upright stems above the foliage. Agapanthus is ideal for planting as an accent, border or mass ground cover. It also makes excellent container specimens and can be used in cut flower arrangements.

They are medium-sized and produce 45-60 cm high foliage, forming a clump up to 60-90 cm wide. Large clusters of pink flowers are borne on upright stems 60-120 cm long.

Lily of the Nile is straightforward to grow and maintain, it can even thrive in neglected conditions and naturalizes easily. Plant in well-drained soil; provide normal water and fertilizer during the growing season. Agapanthus is frost hardy and can be grown in full sun or light shade in zones 8-11, it is hardy to around -6 to -4°C but should be protected with mulch and cover when temperatures are below -6°C for long periods.
Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm spot to maintain an optimum temperature of 18-21°C. Sow in well-drained compost, just covering the seed with compost. Germination usually takes 1-4 months.
