Heron flower, also known as heron grass or narrow-leaved moth orchid, is a perennial herb. Its scientific name is Pecteilis radiata. One of Japan's most iconic orchids is the delicate heron flower, Habenaria radiata. The flower of this plant looks strikingly like a white heron with its puffed-up courtship plumage... 🌸

This is an absolutely stunning terrestrial orchid species native to China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. The lateral lobes of the lip give it the distinctive "heron flower" shape, while the petals, also pure white and slightly serrated, fan out upwards, looking very much like wings, and giving the flower an almost angelic appeal up close. Each spike usually produces 2 or 3 flowers, but sometimes there can be up to 8. 🌿

The whole flower looks remarkably like a white dove/heron in flight! 🕊️

How to grow

Light/Watering: Grow in full sun to partial shade. If rainfall is insufficient, water to keep plants evenly moist, but not wet.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Habenaria grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil. Fertilize lightly with 10-20% of the recommended dose of an all-purpose plant food once or twice when flower shoots emerge.

Continued Care: Mulch during the winter and remove the mulch in the spring to allow the plants to grow. Where Habenaria is not winter hardy ( zone 5 and colder ), it can be grown in pots and placed indoors in a cold area to go dormant. In warmer climates, grow white heron flower in pots and give your plant three months of cold ( 30-35°F or colder ) during the winter before moving it back outside.
