Scientific name: Oil tip herb

Nom latin : Tricyrtis macropoda Miq

Family: Liliaceae

Genre: Genre de Greasia

Properties: Perennial herbaceous plant

Ecological habits: Prefers shade and does not tolerate direct sunlight in summer. When growing, choose a loose and breathable loamy soil.

Plant flowering period: June-October

The rather exotic appearance of this perennial plant brings a special touch to your garden with its late summer flowering. Originally from Taiwan, it is also hardy in our climate. In Czech we call it snake lily, in English it is called toad lily - quite strange. It is also a magnet for photographers because photographing its extraordinary flowers is a real challenge.

Toad lily is a rhizomatous plant with orchid-like leaves and unusual star-shaped flowers with 6 heavily spotted petals and stigmas. The flowers range from light lilac-pink to pale purple with deep spots of dark brown or purple. It flowers profusely on short stems, which makes the plant remain compact even at its peak of flowering. The clump is compact and dense with fresh, broadly lanceolate leaves. It is often accompanied by anemones, leucothoe, rhododendrons or mountain laurels.

Grow it in a semi-shaded but warm position in humus-rich , moist but well-drained soil. Mulch is recommended all year round to prevent the plant from drying out, and as protection in the snowless winter. It emerges in late spring, so we suggest marking the planting spot so you remember there is more to come, especially when all other perennials have shown new growth. Fully hardy to -28°C minimum (USDA zone 8).
